If you have received the notice that your tax returns are being audited by the IRS, you’re probably wondering what you should do. How are you supposed to respond? What can you expect?
There are three types of IRS audits. The most common type is a correspondence audit, it is conducted entirely by mail. The IRS may have questions about your tax return or need additional documentation of your expenses.
The second kind of IRS audit is an office audit. This kind of audit will require you to physically visit an IRS field office to take part in an in-person interview with an auditor. The auditor will request additional information about specific items on your tax returns to confirm their validity
The third kind of IRS audit is a field audit, these audits are rare and are very serious. A revenue agent will come to your home, business, or your accountant’s office to conduct a comprehensive investigation into your taxes.
